In the world we live daily, there are more things unseen than seen. The cherry blossom holds beauty in both blooming and withering. Opposite our affluent society exists a society plagued with warfare and poverty. The actions that we take and the opinions we hold have a ideology and morality which we can never touch with our five senses.
By going to Grossman Academy, Mrs. Grossman made me realize that there exists a world which we cannot see. This Grossman Academy as well as Mrs. Grossman have something amazing and beautiful which we cannot see with our eyes.

For me, Grossman academy is indispensable. Every saturday from 8 there is composition, which includes poetry, analysis papers, essays, and english which has classic japanese and chinese as well as modern literature. The unique advantage of the school is the various approaches taken in these classes. (*Trans: NB. Confusing and probably invalid sentence construction). Since there are only 15 students, it is possible to ask questions and talk one on one with the teacher. Mrs. Grossman's goals of educating each person is extremely helpful. I will become a college student this september. When I needed to decide on my colleges or majors, Mrs. Grossman was able to help me with what was really necessary for me. In a way, Mrs Grossman knew me better than I did, and she helped open the way for a life that was suited to me.
I can say with pride that I am a student of the Grossman Academy. I can say that this is the starting point for my life.

School Introductions from students
Students in Saturday class
Grossman Academy and I Tani NoriyukiGrossman academy is a school which produces geniuses. Though there are few students, each is distinct and interesting. Here, (though I am a middle schooler) we cover Japanese highschool level chinese and japanese classics as well as modern literature as part of our Japanese class. We recently finished "Rashomon" in modern literature. In Japanese classics, we read kenkouhoushi's essays on idleness, as well as matsuo basho's "Oku no Hosomichi" (trans: also known as "the narrow road to the deep north"), while in chinese classics we are reading the works of Li Poh as well as Du Fu.
Here I often realize that knowing one's own identity is important. I learn something each time I come to Grossman Academy, not simply classic and modern literature, but also how to live properly as a person. Knowing one's own identity is one of the things that is learnt at Grossman Academy.
Grossman Academy and I Hiruma Masaharu
Grossman Academy is a school that changed my life. Having met with a teacher with high aspirations I became influenced and began to write each day with more confidence. I was able to reinteract with Japanese which I had neither worked at nor given up, rebuild my sense of identity, and began to equip myself with a sense of morality. I realized how fortunate it was to be able to speak two languages in an increasingly global world. Grossman academy, where I go each week to become truly bilingual as my teacher explains. Mrs. Grossman, who truly changed my life. A 74 year old granny who carries out her high minded goals. After all, a goal of creating geniuses, is not one any elderly can hold.
Grossman Academy and I Funaki Ryo
Three years ago, I, Funaki Ryo entered the Grossman Academy. I will never forget that day. From 1st grade to 5th grade, I went to bay area's largest Japanese Language School. In those six years there the only thing I had learned was kanji. Japanese I could speak before going to the school, Math was more advanced at my American school, History was extremely ad hoc, and no one listened in class. The fact that I spent 6 years of my saturdays learning only about 300 kanji means the only thing I learned was 50 kanji a year. Soon after Graduating that school, my friend started to go to Grossman Academy, so I, too, decided to start attending. The first year was like entering a new world. I realized that Japan was a country to be proud of , and the next two years, I grew with the Grossman Academy and realized that, this school isn't just a normal school. It is a school keeps the meaning and spirit of japan in a sea of american influence.
Grossman Academy and I Sasajima Takuto
A mass of corrections in red casting hues on my work;
The mass of eraser debris being left behind,
the references and papers herded on my desk.
That which targets the homemade lunch,
the 12 on the clock with both hands.
Such a class,
From middle to high school,
15 brought together in a class,
Though their strengths differ,
they all have in common,
they all want to write!
All different and all good,
Today, too, I continue writing
Today, too, Sensei's voice rings
Such a class
is the one I love.
Grossman Academy and I Kamihata Hiroki
Grossman Academy. Every Saturday. From 8 to 3, continuous studying. But from 12 for thirty minutes, there is a happy time of lunch. There, every student relieves the fatigue from studying.
And I wake up every seven, and like 14 others, go to Grossman Academy. Studying from 8 to 3 like everyone else, and eating lunch at twelve.
Mrs. Grossman's goals are to make every student a genius. So Grossman Academy and the other Language schools are no comparison. Thanks to this, my brain is entirely different from before. So going and not going had made all the difference.
Grossman Academy and I Mochinaga Taichi
Grossman Academy, is clearly not a normal school. There are very few students, with a large classroom. In many ways this school is not ordinary.
Material studied at Grossman Academy is a fusion of both Japanese and American curricula. For some reason, after Japanese and Chinese classics, there is SAT prep. According to Mrs. Grossman, this class' english is not adequate, so there is an english class. In any case, nearly everything at American and Japanese school is covered here.
The class is at a Palo Alto community center so it is fairly small. However because of the few people, the class feels quite large. An advantage to this school is that the kanji is basic. People who start Kanji start with that of a 1st grader. In other words, one is able to relearn kanji once forgotten, and while relearning, newly learning kanji.
In many ways Grossman Academy is different; there are only 15 students and though it is a japanese school it covers SAT and English. But because of that it is valuable and worth going.
Grossman Academy and I Kamihata Saki
The first time I attended was a friday class, about 3 years ago. To be honest, the teacher, Mrs Grossman, was more frightening than anything else. The teacher's scolding voice could be heard from outside. "Recently I hear good things about it", my friend told me excitedly. However, of course, my friend had never gone to Grossman Academy.
"This School Creates Geniuses", Grossman Academy holds such a slogan. Mrs. Grossman's friday class has 10, and saturday classes 15 students, which is the limit. Understanding each students' underlying skills, she finds a the kernel to create a genius. If everyone has the same brain, everyone can become a genius and there are endless opportunities. I was able to feel this firsthand in the few years here.
I felt I had gained much. More than at the "saniku" Japanese school I had gone from kindergarden to 6th grade, the things learned at 3 years at Grossman Academy soaked into the brain, as well as the heart. My knowledge did not escape me, but rather passed through the heart and spirit. I am learning the way I should be as a human being.
Grossman Academy and I Osato Asaki
The reason I go to Grossman Academy:
1. If I don't go somewhere saturdays, I end up playing. I end up using the money I worked and earned, and regret it later. Also, so that my parents cant say "you play too much"
2. To not forget Japanese, because I only use Japanese once a week at Grossman Academy
3. Because I get highschool credits. Grossman Academy's credits become foreign language credit, so I don't have to take foreign language, and I can take what I want. If I have many credits, I can go to a good college, and then I can graduate Grossman Academy and become independent.
Grossman Academy and I Suzuki Kenta
Every morning on saturday, about 15 students go to the Grossman Academy. I am one of them, and each time it benefits me. First, during composition we hone our thoughts by writing analysis papers, poetry and essays.
In Japanese class, there is classic japanese and chinese, and modern literature. In the classics there are works such as Confucious' Analects, and Kenkohoshi's Essays on Idleness.
For me, Grossman Academy is a big support. Each time I go, I learn new things about my identity and life (*). I truly feel pride at being a student of the Grossman Academy. I have grown Philosophically, Intellectually, and Spiritually, because of this school.
Grossman Academy and I Mori Taiki
For me Grossman Academy is a place wherein I learn about Japanese and the future. Grossman sensei not only teaches Japanese but also how to succeed in the future.
Since Grossman Academy is only once a week, every saturday is valuable. Because talking with my parents is the only time I use japanese, composition on saturdays is an important time. Since the topic for composition is always from current news and events, its possible to learn both Japanese and world events.
Since Grossman Academy takes only few students, each students gets the finest education. Grossman sensei gives me various helpful advice each week, especially about college and the future. Sensei's advice comes from 74 years worth of experience as well as the experience of her past students. She is proud of all of the students, and believes that it is her responsibility to prepare them to lead a life without regret.
Grossman Academy and I Kasai Rie
I have been attending Grossman Academy for 9 months now. At Grossman academy, I write poetry, analysis, and essays every week. The topic changes every week, and each week's work is returned the next.
The class is very lively and since I can write about many things, it is very fun.
For each of the topics, we use references from newspapers, and write 2 to 3 pages. We can write whatever we want about the topic, since we can write our opinions freely, it is very interesting.
I like writing fiction the best (Trans: NB. Original syntactically incorrect). In fiction I can write whatever I want however I want, it is very free and enjoyable.
Although I can write about many things at Grossman Academy, the 4th week is free topic day, and so I can create the topics I want, and it is even more enjoyable.
(trans: last sentence also doesnt make much sense syntactically, but translated as is).
Grossman Academy and I Nanbara Mia
It has been several weeks since I joined the Grossman Academy. We write about varying topics each week. Before I came to the Grossman Academy I had no ide what was going on in the world. I dont read the news nor do I watch news television, so I had no idea about the world. My writing skills were not great either. Whenver there was a writing assignment at the Japanese Language school I had trouble. Because I could not write I hated writing. But I have changed since coming to Grossman Academy
I began to know more about the world and I began to like writing alot more. If my family had not encouraged me, I believe I would still be unable to write well. I would like to learn many more things at Grossman Academy each week. And I would like to learn and nourish my skills at writing reading and imagining.
To make my writing reading and imagining skills more lively, I will write about various things. Poetry, short fiction, analysis and essays. I am very happy having come here.
Grossman Academy and I Kasai Akihiro
I am Kasai akihiro, a student who has attended Grossman Academy for almost 9 months. I com here every week on friday to write poetry, analysis, and short fiction. When I started coming it was pretty difficult but as I kept on week after week, it began to become enjoyable and fun. I was able to write better during composition, and my vocabulary increased significantly.
Once I finish compsoition, I do about 1 hour of classics. I had just become a 3rd year in middle school this spring, and I had not done the classics at all, but now I am doing them here. Although it is very difficult, because it is exciting and I learn new things, I like it very much.
Since I am able to enjoy as well as gain various new knowelege, I love this Grossman Academy. Although it was hard at first, it soon became very fun.
Grossman Academy and I Minamihara Serina
Grossman academy is an interesting school which allows me to honestly show hope and dreams. When I started writing poetry, essays and analysis within two hours was extremely difficult. My sentences were disorganized, and i would be occupied by reading the references, however, little by little writing became enjoyable.
After attending Grossman Academy for one year, my writing and reading skills improved. Even in my essays and analysis, I was able to write more easily, and was filled with a sense of joy.
And, Grossman Academy's passionate teacher teaches me things that are not listed in the textbook. She teaches us lessons which apply to society, and forces all of us to think.
No matter how one thinks of it, Grossman Academy is not a normal school. Rather, it is a school far more splendid and lasting.
Grossman Academy and I Suzuki Shin
I am suzuki maki, attending Grossman Academy every friday. Though I have been here for 8 months, I am learning and enjoying along with everyone else.
Every week at this school we write poetry, analysis, and short fiction in two hours. This is called composition, and after one week, Grossman sensei corrects in red, grades and returns it. The first time I got back my square lined paper (Trans: Couldn't find appropriate trans) I was taken back at the amount of red. But once I started working harder, I got 100s many times.
After two hours, I learn classic and modern literature. Although I felt that classic japanese and chinese literature was difficult at first, sensei teaches us highschool level material at a very understandable level.
Here, my weakness of writing slowly became a joy and I slowly improved. I intend to continue to learn more at Grossman Academy.
Grossman Academy and I Sasajima Yui
I learned many things after coming to Grossman Academy. At the Japanese Language school, we had to write a poem. Because I had written many poems at Grossman Academy, I was able to easily write the poem.
In addition, because I write short fiction in Grossman Academy often, I like imagining, my strong point.
On square lined paper, I often write essays. Although it is in English, writing it is very easy. What I like the most is the short fiction.
Although I cannot read classic chinese literature well, I am beginning to understand it.
Because of that, I can perform better than other 4th graders when I go to Grossman Academy.
Clover Ring Sugiura Aya
I made a Clover ring. I showed it to everyone in the class.
Aki said "Its pretty"
Shin said "Its well done"
Rie said "I couldn't make that"
Yui said "It smells good"
Serena said "You could sell that"
Kana said "how do you make that?"
Mia said "how sweet, you're giving it to your mother"
Kyoto's brother said "it matches you"
Takuto said "You're good at treeclimbing"
Grossman Academy and I Kawamura Momoko (Tokyo - Distance education student)
Although Grossman Academy is mainly a school for japanese students in the bay area, there are students such as me who are studying by distance education. Grossman Academy's distance education consists only of composition. Each week, we recieve new assignemnts by fax. We write haiku, tanka, poetry, analysis, and essays by reading references from Japanese articles and English articles. The topics are already determined, for example, in analysis many problems are given, and we pick one to write about.
However, each month's 4th week is a free topic day, in other words, we write poetry, tanka, or haiku and analysis on a topic of our choosing. In addition, we do translation of english articles. However, recently I have also been doing problems from the SAT. Sensei reviews and grades our written peices.(*)
I started to attend Grossman Academy when I was really small. This is because I lived in America when I was really small. My Japanese was at a conversational level, and although I did attend Grossman Academy, I basically wrote elementary compositions.
I returned to Japan when I was in 6th grade, and during my 1st middle school year, all my grades except english was in an atrocious state. Because of that, Grossman sensei advised me to quit the club activity I was doing at the time. I followed her advice and quit the club, and read the books she reccomended. Listening to her advice, my grades improved significantly, and during the 3rd year I was able to get grades I'd only dreamed of during the 1st.
Sensei is a person who really thinks about her students. Because of that, one is able to talk to her about many things. If the student is passionate, sensei, too, becomes passionate. Although there are difficult times, if one works earnestly, the things learnt at Grossman Academy become the things that truly matter.
